Organic Stain Removal for Pavers: A Contractor’s Step-by-Step Guide

Every outdoor hardscape project will eventually be impacted by an organic stain—bird droppings, leaf tannins, berries, moss, and algae. Thankfully the process for treating these types of stains is relatively fast and simple.

Below is our reliable, field-tested method that hardscape contractors can use to restore paver surfaces efficiently and with consistent results.

Let’s start with what you’ll need to get the job done.

Tools & Materials

Pro Tip: Have everything staged before starting to keep production moving.

  • 5-gallon pail

  • Large funnel

  • Pre-packaged powdered pool shock (1 lb. packs)

  • Watering can (spout holes widened for better flow)

  • Stiff-bristle deck brush

  • Hose with high-output nozzle

  • Rubber boots

IMPORTANT! Always test first.

Before full application, test the solution in a low-visibility area. Different paver types and finishes can react differently, and a quick test avoids costly issues.

Application Process

1. Mix the Solution

Fill a 5-gallon pail with water (coverage is approximately 200 sq ft per batch). Add one 1 lb. bag of powdered pool shock and allow it to fully dissolve. Use a funnel to transfer solution into a watering can for controlled application.

2. Pre-Wet Surface & Surroundings

Thoroughly wet the target area and any adjacent vegetation. This step is critical for:

  • Protecting plant material

  • Preventing premature absorption

  • Ensuring even distribution

3. Apply in Sections

Work in manageable areas to maintain control and avoid the solution drying too quickly. Be sure to apply the solution evenly using the watering can.

4. Let the Solution Work

Allow the solution to sit for several minutes. This is where the chemistry does the work—breaking down organic material embedded in the surface. Avoid letting the solution dry out, especially in direct sun.

5. Agitate the Surface

Use a stiff deck brush to agitate the area. This helps lift deeper stains and ensures uniform cleaning across the surface.

6. Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse completely using a hose with a strong nozzle. Remove all residue to prevent streaking or surface inconsistencies.

Pro Tips from the Field

  • Work in shaded conditions whenever possible to keep the solution active

  • Keep sections small to maintain consistency across the project

  • Give the solution enough time to work—this is where most of the cleaning happens

  • Repeat as needed for heavily stained areas rather than over-applying in one pass

Recap

Clean pavers aren’t just about appearance—they directly impact perceived job quality and long-term client satisfaction. Follow these simple steps to get the job done right:

  1. Mix the pool shock solution (Don’t forget to test a small area first!)

  2. Pre-wet the surface and surroundings

  3. Apply in sections

  4. Let the solution work

  5. Agitate the surface

  6. Rinse thoroughly
