Eurostone Bond - Where To Use It — And Where Not To

When it comes to polymeric sand, not all products are built the same. Some are designed for standard residential patios. Others are engineered for more demanding applications where joint stability, water resistance, and long-term durability actually matter.

That’s where Alliance Eurostone Bond comes in.

What Is Eurostone Bond?

Eurostone Bond is the strongest polymeric sand in the Alliance product lineup — and arguably the strongest on the market. With an extremely high polymer content, it creates a joint that performs somewhere between a traditional polymeric sand and a mortar joint.

But let’s be clear about something upfront: Eurostone is not a miracle product.

Even the strongest jointing material in the industry cannot overcome poor interlock, unstable patterns, or improperly designed installations. Understanding where Eurostone excels — and where no polymeric sand can compensate for structural issues — is critical for long-term success.

Why IT Exists

Eurostone was specifically developed for challenging installations, especially those involving:

  • Wetcast pavers

  • Natural stone

  • Vehicular applications

  • Projects with limited interlock

Unlike traditional dry cast concrete pavers, many wetcast products have characteristics that make them more vulnerable to movement and joint failure.

These products often feature:

  • Smooth sides

  • Minimal or no true interlock

  • Tapered joints that are wider at the top than the bottom

  • Running bond installation patterns

  • Larger slab formats

In pedestrian applications, a standard high-performance polymeric sand like Gator Maxx may sometimes perform adequately.

But for vehicular traffic? Eurostone is mandatory.

Wetcast Driveways Require Eurostone Bond

If you are installing wetcast pavers in a driveway or any vehicular application, Eurostone is the only Alliance jointing product approved for warranty coverage.

Examples include products like:

These products simply do not behave like traditional interlocking pavers. Without the enhanced strength and water resistance of Eurostone, joint failure becomes highly likely under vehicle loads.

(Note: Alliance will not warranty or offer product credit when Gator Maxx or Gator Supersand are used in these applications.)

The importance of interlock

Here’s the reality many installers overlook:

Polymeric sand does not hold a pavement together by itself.

Interlock matters — and when interlock disappears, movement becomes inevitable.

No Fan Patterns

Fan and circular patterns may look beautiful, but with many wetcast products they eliminate the little interlock that exists in the first place.

That means:

  • More lateral movement

  • Increased joint stress

  • Higher risk of failure

This is especially common with products like Unilock Courtstone installed in circular layouts.

For that reason, fan or circular installations using wetcast pavers are not covered under Alliance’s warranty.

Even Eurostone Bond cannot compensate for a pavement system designed without proper interlock.

Dry-laid cobblestone? Also no.

Another common misconception involves dry-laid cobblestone or Belgian block driveways.

Even when the stones appear tightly packed, they do not truly interlock.

And without interlock:

  • The stones move

  • The joints crack

  • The polymeric sand fails

Eurostone Bond is not intended for vehicular cobblestone or Belgian block installations when the stones are dry-laid over:

  • Sand

  • Chip stone

  • Stone dust

For Eurostone to perform properly in these applications, the cobblestones must first be wet-set in concrete or mortar to physically lock them in place. Otherwise, movement is unavoidable.

A Quick Recap

Use Eurostone When:

  • Installing wetcast pavers

  • Building vehicular applications

  • Working with natural stone

  • Maximum joint strength and water resistance are required

Do NOT Expect Warranty Coverage For:

  • Wetcast driveways using Supersand or Maxx

  • Fan or circular wetcast installations, regardless of joint material used

  • Dry-laid cobblestone or Belgian block vehicular applications

  • Installations lacking proper interlock

One Final Note On Nitro & Nitro-X

Nitro and Nitro-X, Alliance’s two resin-based joint materials, are only appropriate for use on pavers that are completely secured. Therefore, these products should never be used in vehicular applications featuring the paver styles mentioned in this post.

The Bottom Line

Eurostone Bond is engineered for some of the toughest hardscape applications in the industry. But even the strongest polymeric sand cannot overcome poor pavement design, lack of interlock, or structural movement. Choose the right product, use it in the right application, and always follow proven installation practices.

That’s how you build hardscapes that last.
